Independent vs restricted financial advisers
Independent and restricted are regulatory descriptions of the scope of advice. Understanding the distinction can help you ask better questions, but the label alone does not tell you whether an adviser is a good fit.
What independent means
An independent adviser considers a sufficiently diverse range of relevant retail investment products from across the market when making a recommendation, subject to the rules that apply to the advice being given.
What restricted means
A restricted adviser may focus on particular product types, providers or a narrower market. The restriction should be explained clearly so you understand what can and cannot be considered.
Keep in mind
Financial information on Adviser Finder is general and educational. It does not take account of your personal circumstances and is not a recommendation to take, avoid or change any financial product or strategy.
Restricted does not automatically mean unsuitable
A restricted firm may have deep expertise in the area you need. The issue is whether the restriction matters for your objectives and whether you understand its practical effect.
Independent does not mean every product in existence
Independence is not a promise that every possible provider will be individually researched for every recommendation. The adviser still uses a professional research and suitability process.
Ask the practical question
Instead of stopping at “are you independent?”, ask: what products, providers or solutions are outside your scope for the advice I need? That answer is often more informative.
Check specialist permissions
Some work requires specialist permissions or qualifications. Pension transfers involving safeguarded benefits are an obvious example. The broad independent/restricted label does not replace checking permissions.
Service and adviser fit still matter
Communication style, planning process, fees, continuity and quality of explanation can matter as much as the market scope. A good adviser should make their status and limitations easy to understand.
